MYSTERIES...AND SMALLER PIECES

Collective Creation

As an epilogue to the six-month run of The Brig, The Living Theatre will present Mysteries...and Smaller Pieces, a recreation of the 1964 collective creation that changed theatrical history.  Created directly after the company had been playing The Brig for several years, Mysteries was the first play to be presented on the world’s major stages without fictional characters, plot, scenery or costumes, the virtually wordless composition redefines the nature of theater as pure communication between performers and audience.

Relying on nonverbal sounds and improvised actions, Mysteries invokes the Dionysian sources of drama, offering the audience the opportunity of assisting in a series of rituals meant to liberate the actor’s deepest resources.

The Mysteries company brings together founder Judith Malina with members who have worked for decades together with a new generation of young members.  The production is being directed by Judith Malina and veteran Mysteries performer Gary Brackett, who is also designing the lighting.  Performances Wednesday through Saturday at 8pm, Sundays at 4pm.
