The Living Theatre is back! After years abroad, the time has come to return to our roots in New York City — we are opening a new performing space on the Lower East Side. Our opening production will be The Brig by Kenneth H. Brown, which the company first created in 1963. Because a play about brutality inside a U.S. military prison seems more to the point today than ever.
It seems a propitious time for a new space. It is the Year of the Golden Pig, Judith's 80th birthday and the 60th anniversary of the company's founding!
Beyond our repertory, we will also be offering evenings dedicated to poetry, music, dance and alternative political organization, as well as workshop programs and exhibitions. Most of all, we are hoping to become a focal point for the expression of dissent and the innovation of peace. We also look forward to presenting the work of like-minded artists. And we will continue to bring our theatre into the streets at critical moments.
The rent for this new space is steep and we are depending on you, our audience, to keep The Living Theatre alive in New York. We ask you to become members of the theatre and to encourage as many others as possible to do the same.
Please allow us to list your name among the founding members of the new Living Theatre on Clinton Street.
